Early Life and Basketball Career in China
Yao Ming was born on September 12, 1980 in Shanghai, China. He grew up in a family of basketball players with both of his parents having played for China's national basketball team. Yao started playing basketball at a young age and was quickly noticed for his impressive height, reaching over 6 feet tall by the age of 10. By the time he was 14, Yao was already playing for Shanghai's youth basketball team and quickly moved up to play for the senior team as well. He became a regular member of China's national team and helped lead them to success at the Asian Basketball Championship in 1999.Joining the NBA
Yao's impressive performances on China's national basketball team caught the attention of NBA scouts and in 2002, he was selected first overall by the Houston Rockets in the NBA draft. At the time, he was the tallest player in the NBA, standing at 7 feet 6 inches tall.Yao quickly became one of the NBA's leading players, despite facing initial difficulty adjusting to the different style of play and physicality of the league. In his rookie season, he was named to the NBA All-Rookie First Team and went on to be named an NBA All-Star every year of his career except his final season due to injury.Impact and Legacy
